Prior to becoming a full member of an Strange Worlds game, each player must complete Player Orientation. During orientation, the participants will learn about game communication and interaction. It is not very time consuming. Player Orientation does promote a positive and enjoyable gaming experience.
What is needed to play the games? Games are played in chatrooms, therefore, an IRC program (mIRC, Pirch, etc.) is required. Most are free for download from the internet. Feel free to sign up once you have an IRC program.
Players must complete orientation before joining any active team. Orientation is completed after:
1. Signing Up - each player needs to sign-up and attend Player Orientation. Orientation may last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Orientation may take more than one meeting in a chatroom. The Game Master holding the orientation will determine this. The SWEF Player Orientation Schedule is listed below for you to see which day and time best suits you (times are negotiable, so speak with the Game Master if the times listed are not convenient). Once a player determines which day is best for their orientation, they need go to the Join A Game forum and sign up for the game of their choice. Please provide the information SWEF needs (listed in the Join A Game forum). Their post will be read and the Game Master will email them with further information.
2. Review - Reviewing the SWEF Player Manual is perhaps the most important step in orientation. Without a working knowledge of communication conventions and general game operations, a player will have a more difficult time during orientation. Players must review and become familiar with the SWEF Player Manual, which will be emailed to them by the Game Master.
3. Attend - Having completed the above steps, the player attends live practice game. During the practice game, the players will go over the Strange Worlds communication conventions, until the Game Master feels they have a good understanding of them. The remainder of the time will consist of other aspects of playing in SWEF. A live game simulation will be held either at the end of the orientation or in a second meeting of the orientation. The game simulation is designed to help players understand and get a feel for live on-line chatroom gaming firsthand.
Once a player completes Player Orientation, they will need to select a weekly game. Player Orientation takes place in a chat room of the Game Master's choosing. All chat rooms can be found on the freedom.il.us.starchat.com chat server. Server connection information will be emailed to players, by the Game Master. It is wise to connect to the chat server, before your Player Orientation meeting date, to be sure connection is available. If there is a connection problem, please contact Game Master immediately.
Please be sure to read the SWEF Player Manual (which will be emailed to you) before attending Player Orientation. This will make the experience more enjoyable for both you and the Game Master.
